PAGUS:AFRICA is currently sponsoring a child named Mercy at the Volta School for the Deaf. Mercy was formerly schooled in a small village where she was the only deaf student, surrounded by teachers who were not trained to communicate with her. Mercy’s circumstances changed with the assistance of the good people at PAGUS:AFRICA. Now Mercy is excelling in her classes. She has made many friends and is learning how to crochet. She is very quick to learn sign language, and was lucky to have been placed amongst her peers at an early age. PAGUS:AFRICA has also supported our mission by purchasing handicrafts made by the Vocational Students. Their assistance has helped to encourage older students who are towards the end of the education cycle and aspiring to become independent and learn a vocation. The purchases made by PAGUS:AFRICA have helped to buy more materials and equipment, so that more students can continue to pursue their vocation. CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS
In July 2011 Carl, a passionate teacher from an inner city Chicago school came to visit the Volta School for the Deaf. His mission was to look for evidence of progress towards the United Nations 8 Millennium goals. He was also looking for a way to engage his classroom in a meaningful project that would aid in achieving these goals by 2015. Carl brought back work from the Volta School for the Deaf and is using it in his classroom to promote help tell his story about those living in Ghana. We hope to hear more from Carl and his class, as he has had a lasting impact on several projects on his research mission in Ghana. LEARN MORE ABOUT CARL’S WORK HERE
